The Feldenkrais Method® is widely known for helping people recover from injury, find ways to relieve chronic pain, and increase efficiency and skill in whatever they do — bike to work, make music, dance, garden, work at a computer or as a short-order cook — you name it. It was designed to increase your own ability to give yourself the kind of attention and care you naturally bestow on someone you love, respect, and depend on.
Because we all tend to keep moving in the ways we’ve already learned to move, each Awareness Through Movement® class focuses us on subtly varying our familiar movements. You’ll find the lesson for the day challenges some of your habits. As you’re verbally guided through a particular movement sequence, you’ll be encouraged to move slowly and gently, to carefully notice details of how you move, not to push beyond what’s comfortable, and to rest whenever you need to. It’s this simple activity of really noticing your movement and your sensations that allows your nervous system to reassess — and perhaps discard — any habit that now hurts you or no longer serves you well.
Many of these lessons are done lying on the floor, but some keep you on your feet or seat you on a chair. At the end of a session, you may be surprised by the differences you notice in yourself after making and observing the unfamiliar movements that seemed to be “doing nothing.”
All ages and levels of flexibility are welcome. Come dressed for comfortable moving. Mats are provided.
ATM classes at Linnton Community Center: Mondays 11am — 12 noon Prepaid series of 4 – 6 lessons: $8 per lesson Drop-Ins: $12 per lesson
